off to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

It was time for me to revisit the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, for their current exhibition of Orchids and Bonsai trees.

Here are a couple of snaps I took.

Most of the Bonsais’ were decades old.

If you haven’t seen the exhibit, don’t miss out! Its huge. It opened the January the 12th and will be down Feb the  24th. This exhibition is in addition to their 13 spaces full of all sorts of exotic species. The Phipps is kind of famous in Pittsburgh, since its opening 1863. Besides being one of the greenest facilities in the world, they have now just opened their new green-engineered Welcome Center, topped by a plump neo-Victorian dome, a Production Greenhouse, the Tropical Forest Conservatory and the "Healer's Hut". Check that out, here.

One of the best things about the place is the permanently installed glass art bountifully scattered throughout. The glasswork was created by the amazingly prolific Dale Chihuly. Throughout the gardens a vibrant collection of glass pieces are embedded within the verdant evergreen, meandering around the flora and fauna, creeping under, around and over, the plants in such an organic way that on first glance, they can easily be mistaken for wildly colorful plants and flowers themselves.

Amazing stuff.
